The 7 mistakes that kill SME websites

I've audited dozens of SME websites. The same mistakes come up every time — and each one costs you customers and money. Here are the 7 most common mistakes and how to fix them.

1. A site that's too slow (cost: -7% of customers per second)

According to Google (Think with Google), 53% of mobile visitors leave a site that takes more than 3 seconds to load. And a site going from 1 to 5 seconds sees its bounce rate rise by 90%. If your site is on shared hosting with WordPress plugins, it's probably above 3 seconds. Every visitor who leaves is a potential customer lost.

2. No mobile version (you lose 60% of your visitors)

In 2026, 60% of web traffic comes from mobile. A non-responsive site loses the majority of its visitors AND is penalized by Google in the search results. A double penalty: less traffic and less visibility. A responsive site is the absolute minimum in 2026.

3. No clear call to action

Your visitor lands on your site. They see your offer. And then what? If the "Contact us" or "Request a quote" button isn't visible immediately (without scrolling), the visitor leaves. Every page must have a clear, visible and convincing CTA (Call To Action). The difference between a well-placed CTA and no CTA? Up to 5x more contact requests.

4. A dated or generic design

Visitors judge your business on the appearance of your site in less than 5 seconds. A site that looks like a 2018 template doesn't inspire trust. A modern, custom design shows that you're serious and professional. It's the first impression your customers have of your business — make it flawless.

5. No SEO = invisible on Google

Having a site without SEO is like having a shop in a back alley with no sign. Nobody finds you. According to a Backlinko study, fewer than 1% of users click on a result on page 2 of Google. If you're not there, you don't exist. SEO must be built in from the creation of the site, not added afterward.

6. No HTTPS (a red flag for visitors)

A site without an SSL certificate (https) displays a "Not secure" warning in the browser. Chrome and Firefox show a "Not secure" warning that scares visitors away. Google also penalizes non-HTTPS sites in its results. HTTPS is free (Let's Encrypt) and mandatory in 2026.

7. No updates in years

A site displaying outdated information (old prices, an old team, a 2020 copyright) gives an impression of abandonment. Customers wonder whether the business still exists. Your site must reflect the current state of your business. An up-to-date site inspires trust and generates more inquiries.

In short

Each of these 7 mistakes costs you customers and revenue every day. If your site suffers from 3 or more of these problems, a new professional website is the most profitable investment you can make. A modern, fast and well-ranked site can double or triple your number of contact requests.
